Artificial Tyre Reef, Fort Lauderdale, Florida
There are currently 20,000,000 end-of-life tyres in Australia each year. 64% are committed to landfill and 14% illegally dumped. In the US alone, there are 700,000,000 million tyres that need disposing each year. The only form of effective tyre recycling in the market is converting the tyres into crumb (granulated rubber).
The government at both Federal and State level in Australia has recognised that waste tyre disposal needs to be better managed but realises it cannot change the industry until a viable, sustainable way of disposing of tyres is in place such as Tyremil.
